my story
Growing up in New York, my mom played Mahjongg every Friday night! I loved hearing the sound of the tiles and the ladies utter all these funny words, like dots, bams, craks, flowers, dragons, and then exuberantly exclaim Mahjongg!
After graduating from UMass in Amherst, I moved to San Francisco in 1978. I married a Native San Franciscan in 1984 and we bought our home in beautiful Marin County.
After I retired from Corporate America in 2011, I took a 4 week Mahjongg class. I was so overwhelmed after the first class and had a new respect for my mother's intellect! But there was something soo intriguing about the game. After the second class, it started to slowly come together. I was hooked!
American MahJongg is a challenging, frustrating, exciting but wonderful, fun, and very social games.
My love and passion for the game and its strategy grew and I began teaching with the Age-Friendly Intergenerational Center in Corte Madera in 2018. In 2021, I started Hosting & Teaching American Mahjongg at Vivalon in San Rafael. I love introducing new players to this wonderful game!
As a kid, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher, but I never went for it. But I’m so glad I’m doing it now!
I’ve had the pleasure of teaching over 600 people, mostly in Marin, how to enjoy this strategic and dynamic game. I’ve run some tournaments, won some tournaments, gone on a Mahjongg cruise, invested in a wardrobe of Mahjongg accessories, and started making MahJongg jewelry and other handmade mahjongg tchotchkes.
Some of my Mahj accomplishments include:
-
I built the Tuesday Mahj at Vivalon Open Play, where we currently have 8 to 14 tables each week. Many of the players are my former students, and it’s such a joy to have them there and watch them grow.
-
I’ve also taught with Recreation Departments and Tennis clubs throughout Marin.
-
I’ve donated my Services as a Fundraiser.
I love teaching, and I’m honored to call myself a Mahjongg Maven.
I hope you enjoy my site. I am very lucky and grateful and totally love what I do!
